How to Write a Resume With No Experience: A Guide for Indian Freshers

Zero work experience doesn't mean zero to put on your resume. Here's how to build a strong fresher resume that gets shortlisted at top companies — with a template and real examples.

Every experienced professional started with a blank resume. The challenge for freshers isn't that you have nothing to offer — it's knowing how to present what you do have in a way that makes recruiters take notice. This guide shows you exactly how to structure your fresher resume, what to include when you have no work experience, and the mistakes that get even strong candidates rejected.

A fresher resume needs to make its signal easy to find: relevant projects, skills you can demonstrate, education, and links to real work. Clear structure matters because limited experience leaves less room for noise.

The Fresher Resume Structure (in Order)

  1. 1Contact Information: Name, phone, email, LinkedIn, GitHub. No photo, no date of birth, no address (city is enough).
  2. 2Education: College name, degree, CGPA (if 7.5+), year of graduation. Add relevant coursework if strong.
  3. 3Technical Skills: Programming languages, frameworks, tools, cloud platforms. Categorize them.
  4. 4Projects (2-3 strongest): This is the heart of your fresher resume. More detail here than anywhere else.
  5. 5Internships (if any): Even a 2-month internship goes here — company, role, what you built.
  6. 6Achievements: Competitive programming ratings, hackathon wins, scholarships, national competitions.

Weak vs strong project entry

WEAK: 'Personal Finance Tracker | React, Node.js, MongoDB — Built a web application to track personal finances.' STRONG: 'Personal Finance Tracker | React, Node.js, MongoDB | github.com/you/pft — Built full-stack expense tracking app with real-time budget alerts; implemented JWT auth; reduced load time 40% via lazy loading; 120+ GitHub stars, deployed on Render.'

The Photo and Personal Details Problem

Indian freshers often include a photo, date of birth, gender, and marital status on their resume — a carryover from older conventions and government job formats. For private sector tech and corporate roles, remove all of these. Modern hiring practices discourage demographic information on resumes to reduce bias. A photo costs you more than it gains at most product companies and MNCs.

CGPA: When to Include It

Many companies have a stated CGPA cutoff (7.5 or 7.0 out of 10). If you're above the cutoff for the companies you're targeting, include your CGPA prominently. If you're below, omit it — a human recruiter seeing a strong project section may overlook a missing CGPA. Don't lie if directly asked, but you're not required to volunteer it.

Competitive Programming: A Cheat Code

If you have a high competitive programming rating, list it prominently near the top of your resume. A Codeforces Expert (1600+), LeetCode top ranking, or top-500 rank in Google Kickstart or CodeChef Long will get your resume read at FAANG and top product companies even without a strong GPA or name-brand college.

Formatting Rules That Matter

  • 1 page only. If a recruiter sees page 2 from a fresher, it's a red flag about judgment.
  • Use a clean, single-column layout. Fancy two-column designs often break ATS parsing.
  • Font: 10-11pt for body, 14-16pt for name. Calibri, Arial, or Roboto — nothing decorative.
  • Consistent date format throughout: 'Jun 2024' or '06/2024' — pick one and stick to it.
  • PDF format for human reviewers; check the job posting — some portals require .docx.
  • File name: FirstName_LastName_Resume.pdf — not 'Resume_Final_v3_UPDATED.pdf'.
